Welcome To The Jungle budget revealed; the film made on 125 crores is a huge box office winner after opening weekend
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Welcome To The Jungle isn’t just its massive ensemble cast or its box office performance it’s Akshay Kumar’s unique remuneration model. Instead of charging his customary acting fee upfront, the superstar opted for a backend deal, agreeing to take no salary for the film while securing a percentage share of the profits. The move significantly reduced the film’s making cost while giving Akshay a vested interest in the film’s long-term commercial success by making him an active stakeholder in the film’s share of profits.
According to trade estimates, Welcome To The Jungle has been mounted on a controlled production budget of Rs. 125 crores. The largest chunk of the expenditure has gone into the film’s shoot, with production costs amounting to Rs. 60 crores. Given the film’s scale, action sequences and extensive ensemble cast, the figure reflects an attempt to balance spectacle with financial prudence.
Interestingly, the cost of the cast has been kept at Rs. 35 crores, a number that is considerably lower than what one would typically expect from a film featuring multiple established actors. The biggest reason behind this is Akshay Kumar’s decision to forgo an acting fee.
The technical crew and director’s remuneration account for another Rs. 15 crores, while Rs. 15 crores have been allocated towards print and publicity, taking the total cost of production to approx Rs. 125 crores.
The backend deal is perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the film’s financial structure. Rather than earning a fixed amount irrespective of the film’s performance, Akshay has tied his earnings directly to the profits generated after the producers recover their investment. With a share of the profits, the actor stands to earn significantly if Welcome To The Jungle enjoys a healthy theatrical run and performs well across satellite, digital and music rights.
This strategy has increasingly become popular among top stars who are confident about a project’s commercial prospects. For producers, it lowers the immediate making cost by reducing star fees, while for actors, it offers the possibility of earning much more than a conventional paycheck if the film turns into a success.
At present, Welcome To The Jungle has collected Rs. 94.63 crores at the worldwide box office. The film has almost recovered its production cost with only 3 days of theatrical collections in India, the journey towards profitability will depend on its hold over the coming weeks, overseas performance and the contribution from non-theatrical revenue streams.
For Akshay Kumar, the stakes are therefore higher than ever. Every additional crore the film earns beyond its recovery point directly enhances his earnings under the profit-sharing arrangement. Unlike a traditional salary, his remuneration is entirely performance-linked, making him as invested in the film’s commercial outcome as its producers.
