Khushbu Rajendra gets candid about her new family drama COLORS’ ‘Ram Bhavan’
Every house has its stories, but in a unique role reversal, COLORS open the doors to a mansion bursting with power struggles in its new show, ‘Ram Bhavan’. The upcoming family drama pulls back the curtains on an explosive feud of pride, wit, and egos within the walls of this tumultuous abode. Welcome to Ram Bhavan, where Om, the rebellious self-styled ‘hisaab ka bada pakka’, struts around with a prideful swagger, but yearns for a life built on his knack for jugaad. Isha, unlike Om, is patient and grounded, determined to work her way up the status ladder with a resilience forged from a fall from riches. With nothing in common, Om and Isha find themselves with a shared enemy – Gayatri, Om’s manipulative bhabhi and Isha’s ruthless boss. Gayatri, the tyrant of Ram Bhavan, holds the monetary strings and, with them, the fate of her sasural. Her reign of terror is challenged by Om, her jugaadu brother-in-law, who fights to reclaim his family’s dignity and secure a government job as a symbol of his worth, enduring the scathing humiliation doled out by his bhabhi. Meanwhile, Isha, the rooted princess, stands as a picture of patience against Gayatri’s unwarranted wrath. After having fallen from riches to bankruptcy, Isha proves her professional potential despite facing relentless oppression by her brutal boss. Provoked by Gayatri’s constant belittling, Om and Isha unite in an unlikely alliance, threatening to blow the roof off their oppressor’s empire. Will Om and Isha manage to knock down Gayatri’s dominance or will they be forced to take shelter in her absolute power? Starring Mishkat Varma as Om, Khushi Rajendra as Isha, and Samiksha Jaiswal as Gayatri, ‘Ram Bhavan’ premieres on 29th January and thereafter airs every night at 8.30 pm only on COLORS.
1. Tell us about the show.
‘Ram Bhavan’ is a gripping family drama that revolves around a match of wit, ego, and resilience, all within the grand, secret-filled walls of a sprawling titular bungalow in Prayagraj. Gayatri, the dominating bahu of the Vajpayee family is a General Manager at a reputed restaurant and she reigns over the entire family because she holds the monetary strings of the household. Her authority is challenged by Om, her rebellious brother-in-law, who resents her for condemning the family members and using her financial prowess against them, while he strives to secure a government job to prove his worth. Meanwhile, Isha, Gayatri’s humble yet strong-willed employee, is a rooted princess who has fallen from riches to bankruptcy. Despite Gayatri’s insecurities driving her to make Isha’s life difficult, Isha handles her with patience. Together, Om and Isha find themselves in an unexpected alliance against Gayatri. Ram Bhavan becomes the centre stage where purpose, pride, and power struggles brew into a clash with Om and Isha on one side and Gayatri on the other.
2. Tell us about your character.
Isha is a rooted princess in every sense. Born into a wealthy family, she was once surrounded by luxury, but life has thrown its fair share of hardships her way. Despite the tremendous loss she’s faced, Isha remains a simple, kind-hearted soul, always treating everyone around her with warmth and care. She embodies quiet strength, showing that true power doesn’t always have to be loud. While she may seem humble and reserved, when it comes to standing up for what she believes in, Isha becomes a force to be reckoned with. She learns to navigate the pressures of a demanding office environment, especially under the weight of her boss’s dominance. Her alliance with Om brings a refreshing perspective to the Ram Bhavan household, subtly challenging Gayatri’s iron grip on the family and setting the stage for a powerful shift in dynamics.
3. What kind of prep did you do for your role?
Preparing for Isha’s role was about understanding her strength in the face of personal loss. Since she contrasts with Om’s fiery personality, I focused on creating that balance. I read the script and tried my best to bring to life the vision of the makers. I paid more attention to conveying my thoughts through my expressions and body language rather than dialogue.
4. How was your experience collaborating with COLORS?
COLORS has consistently set high standards in television, and it’s an honour to be working with it on this exciting new project. Essaying the lead role is a huge responsibility and I will do everything possible to do justice to it. This is an exciting new chapter of my acting career.
5. What has your experience been like working with your co-actors?
Both Mishkat and Samiksha bring a lot of positive energy and dedication to their roles. They are very different from the roles they are essaying, but once the camera rolls, they transform into completely different people. They are mindful of the needs of others on set and very giving as performers. I couldn’t have asked for better co-actors.
6. What’s the most exciting part of this journey for you as an actor?
Very few people can maintain Isha’s humility and patience in the face of adversity—many would be bitter, but she understands what she must do in every situation. Channelling her strength while staying true to her essence has been a delicate balance, and the key for me has been getting out of my own way to bring that depth and resilience to the audience. It’s been a challenging yet emotionally enriching journey that I feel incredibly fulfilled by.
7. What is the most challenging part of playing your character?
For the character of Isha, the challenge was portraying her strength through subtle actions rather than overt displays. I had to make sure that I portrayed the emotions of Isha’s through emotions and body language rather than dialogue. It’s a character that demands emotional depth and nuance.
8. What sets this show apart from other family dramas?
Ram Bhavan truly stands apart with its powerful combination of family drama and intense power struggles. The heritage property of Ram Bhavan is not just a backdrop—it becomes a character, symbolizing the clash of egos, resilience, and familial ties. The drama revolves around this house, where the politics of both home and office collide, often coming head-to-head with a single authoritarian or tyrannical figure. This unique blend of personal and professional power plays makes Ram Bhavan a story like no other on television.
9. Any message for our fans?
We’re truly excited for you to meet our characters and experience the drama that unfolds within the walls of Ram Bhavan. We can’t wait to welcome you in and see for yourself the story we have worked very hard to enliven. Hope you shower love on the show!
