A Look at Disha Patani’s Journey to Awarapan 2
Some films become franchises because they are blockbusters. Others become franchises because audiences refuse to let them fade away. Awarapan belongs to the latter.
When Mohit Suri’s Awarapan released in 2007, it transformed it into one of Hindi cinema’s most-loved cult films. Emraan Hashmi’s brooding Shivam Pandit found a loyal following, and songs like Toh Phir Aao, Mahiya and Tera Mera Rishta continue to be rediscovered by newer generations. Nearly two decades later, the sequel comes on the back of a legacy that only grew stronger with time.
Over the last decade, she has built a career around scale. From M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story to Baaghi 2, Bharat, Malang, Kalki 2898 AD and most recently Welcome To The Jungle, she has been part of some of Hindi cinema’s biggest commercial entertainers. She’s carved out a reputation as one of the premier action heroines in the business, mixing glamorous part with physically demanding stunts.
Awarapan 2, however, promises a different avatar.
The original film is remembered because of its emotional weight. Love, guilt, sacrifice and redemption formed the backbone of the story, and every character contributed to Shivam’s journey. The sequel therefore carries expectations that go beyond delivering action or chartbuster songs, it has to live up to the emotions that audiences have protected for nearly 20 years.
Disha understands what the original means to fans because she was one herself. She slipped effortless into the world of the movie and from whatever we have seen of the film, Disha suits perfectly opposite Emraan Hashmi. That willingness to learn what the project demands has shaped much of Disha’s recent work. While speaking about Welcome To The Jungle recently, she described the film as a rare opportunity to work alongside some of the industry’s finest comic actors. Rather than worrying about making an impression in a cast of more than 20 actors, she viewed the experience as a chance to observe seasoned performers at close quarters.
That kind of mindset might come in handy in Awarapan 2 where the expectations are out of the roof. The sequel is carrying the weight of one of Bollywood’s most cherished cult films, and every addition to its cast will inevitably be measured against the memories audiences have held onto for years.
After Welcome To The Jungle reaffirmed her place in mainstream commercial cinema, Awarapan 2 gives Disha an opportunity to be part of a story driven by emotions rather than scale alone. It reunites Vishesh Films with one of its most celebrated properties and places her opposite an actor whose romantic dramas have defined an era of Hindi cinema.
For an actor who has proven since last decade that she belongs in big-ticket entertainers, Awarapan 2 offers her the chance to become part of a legacy.
