Bhumi Satish Pednekkar condemns alleged assault on women protesters in Delhi: ‘Disturbing, wrong and unacceptable’
Strap – The actor, who has consistently used her platform to speak about gender equality and social issues, shared two Instagram Stories after videos of women protesters allegedly being assaulted during the CJP demonstration in Delhi surfaced online.
Bhumi Pednekkar has a pointed question for a society that celebrates women as goddesses but struggles to treat them with dignity in everyday life. The actor took to Instagram Stories on Sunday to call out the contradiction, sharing a message on the treatment of women during Navratri and amplifying a report about the alleged assault of women protesters during the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) demonstration in Delhi.
Sharing a post, Bhumi highlighted the irony of men worshipping goddesses for nine days during Navratri, only to return to harassing women through the rest of the year. The post read, “And for the next act: men will worship a goddess for nine straight days, then burn Ravan for abducting a woman and then go right back to harassing the women for the other 365 days. Quite a performance.”
In another story, the actor shared a report stating that Delhi Police had arrested four men allegedly seen in a viral video assaulting women protesters during the CJP protest. Condemning the visuals, Bhumi wrote, “These videos circulating of women & children being abused and harassed are disturbing, wrong and unacceptable. Shame!”
The stories come amid scrutiny of the police response to Saturday’s demonstrations in the national capital, where thousands of people were detained as authorities moved to prevent the planned protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Videos and eyewitness accounts of the police action have prompted questions about the treatment of demonstrators, including women. According to reports, the Supreme Court subsequently directed authorities to ensure that detentions comply with the law and that citizens’ movement is not unlawfully restricted.
Her latest posts bring the conversation back to the innate contradiction that extends beyond festivals and public displays of devotion – reverence for women means little if it does not translate into respect for their safety, dignity and right to speak up. For the actor, the images emerging from Delhi are a reminder that the treatment of women must be questioned not just when it becomes a headline, but also in the everyday conduct that society continues to normalise.
