Producer Anubhav Sinha talks about the moral authority and unity of India’s freedom fighters as his upcoming film starring Manoj Bajpayee explores a crucial, lesser-known chapter of Mahatma Gandhi’s journey.

Anubhav Sinha and Sudhir Mishra have joined hands for an ambitious theatrical film that dives into a lesser-known chapter of India’s independence history. Starring National Award winner Manoj Bajpayee as Mahatma Gandhi alongside Saurabh Shukla, the project focuses on a pivotal 21-day period around India’s independence, when Gandhi stepped away from the center of power in Delhi to quietly rediscover and reinvent himself. Produced by Anubhav Sinha under Benaras Media Works alongside Narendra Hirawat and presented by NH Studioz, the film marks a significant cinematic collaboration between two master storytellers.

Known for making cinema that drives conversation, Anubhav Sinha feels the stories of India’s iconic leaders hold lessons that are relevant even today. Talking about Mahatma Gandhi’s influence and moral strength, Sinha recalled a simple yet profound conversation with his son: “I was telling my son, ‘Gandhi woh aadmi tha jo kehta tha ki tum log jhagda band nahi karoge toh main khana nahi khaunga.’ Toh mera beta hasne lag gaya. Bola, ‘Toh?’ Toh maine kaha, ‘Log jhagda band kar dete thay.’ Ek baar nahi hua, kai baar hua. Yeh uss aadmi ka power tha.”

Sinha also pointed out how leaders of that era put the nation above personal differences, highlighting the respect between Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. “Ambedkar ke, Gandhi ke views sabko maloom hain. Par jab Constituent Assembly banti hai, toh woh Nehru se jaakar kehte hain ki Constitution inse likhwao, because yeh desh ko behtar samajhte hain, desh ke vanchiton ko behtar samajhte hain. Aur woh aadmi jo unhe criticise karta tha, woh aisa karne ko agree kar deta hai. Woh Congress party join karta hai,” Sinha observed.

For the vision behind his ambitious upcoming project, Sinha feels this spirit of mutual respect is what made that generation of leaders truly legendary. “Yeh bade unique log thay. Ambedkar ho, Gandhi ho, Patel ho. Yeh baat toh sach hai na ki Patel ko zyada votes mile thay aur Gandhi ne kaha ki nahi, Nehru! Toh woh step back kar jaate hain, aur aapko kahin bhi Gandhi, Patel aur Nehru ke beech koi animosity ya sarcastic remark dekhne ko nahi milta. Nehru, Gandhi, even V. P. Menon. In logon par toh itna zyada kaam hone ki zaroorat hai. Bhagat Singh, Bose,” he added.

The project has already generated buzz across the industry, further bolstered by the addition of veteran actor Waheeda Rehman, who returns to the big screen after eight years. With a talented cast led by Manoj Bajpayee, Saurabh Shukla, and Waheeda Rehman, the drama promises a memorable theatrical experience that explores the human side of history.
The film stands out as one of the most awaited releases in recent times, bringing together two of Indian cinema’s finest creative minds to tell a story that feels both personal and universally relevant.

The film is directed by Sudhir Mishra and features Manoj Bajpayee and Saurabh Shukla in key roles. The film is produced by Anubhav Sinha and Narendra Hirawat under A Benaras Mediaworks production and presented by NH Studioz.
