Varun Dhawan starrer Badlapur, a landmark revenge drama in Dhawan’s career, completes a glorious 11 years today. Before Badlapur, Varun had often done frothy roles, and this revenge drama showed him in an entirely different shade as Raghu, who loses his wife and son and plans an elaborate revenge on the wrongdoers. As beautiful and intense the role seemed, its dark side cast an effect on Varun’s mental health.

Earlier, the actor revealed that the film affected his mental health and left him “very sad” to a certain degree. Having played bubbly roles before, the significant transformation from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania to Badlapur could have acted as a trigger. Dhawan added that the transition hit him harder because he hadn’t seen the things he got to witness during the making of Badlapur.

To dive into Raghu’s dark side, Varun had to learn about anguish and desperation. Earlier, David Dhawan had stated that the actor was constantly edgy and nervous and would cry for no reason, leaving him and his wife worried about his constant melancholic mood.

In addition to this, even director Sriram Raghavan admitted that Varun had a tough time getting a grip on the role. As the actor had never suffered a kind of loss and hurt that his character went through, Varun needed to understand the anguished grief and desperation of the character. The solution to cracking Raghu was to get close to grief – Varun did – and brought out his best, only to serve a landmark performance of his career!

Released back in 2015, Badlapur continues to remain a rollercoaster watch purely for its dark themes and rich characters, especially Varun’s. If Rohan Nanda from Student of the Year watched Raghu from Badlapur, he’d be really proud to broaden his range. Badlapur strengthened Varun’s stand as one of the best performers of the generation – and honestly, we’re seated to watch more of him!
