Bhumi Satish Pednekkar has never shied away from challenging conventions, and she continues that streak with her upcoming series Daldal. The actress steps into the shoes of a cop for the first time, portraying DCP Rita Ferreira a gritty, restrained police officer navigating a male-dominated ecosystem. Known for making bold and unconventional screen choices, Bhumi once again gravitates towards a character that pushes boundaries and demands emotional honesty.

Bhumi shares that opportunities to portray “humanised” women are what truly excite her as an actor, adding that such characters are often shaped by the creative freedom offered by the makers. “There’s a difference between being bitter and being somebody who does not have the patience for nonsense,” she says, highlighting the fine line her character walks through quiet resistance rather than overt aggression.

Offering a deeper insight into DCP Rita Ferreira, Bhumi proudly describes her as a “misfit” in a deeply misogynistic police system. She explains how Rita’s emotional restraint and guarded demeanour make her presence quietly disruptive rather than performative. “In Rita’s case, she doesn’t give you a lot, she doesn’t give you anything. She can be happy, sad, angry anger is something that she expresses really well. So, if a person is in a conversation with her, they aren’t really going to get anything from her. So, she’s such a misfit in that misogynistic man’s world of the police. The way it’s portrayed is because these are the themes,” she says.

Clarity, Bhumi believes, is what drives her to make the right creative choices. She adds that she isn’t “scared of pushing it a little just because I don’t want to be whitewashed.” Addressing societal expectations placed on women, both on and off screen, she explains, “Women are generally expected to be that even in our real life everything has to be so poised and proper. I just want to break every rule where that is concerned. I’m like she’s messy, flawed or she’s selfish, greedy she envies people, she’s jealous and that’s okay,” she states.

At the same time, Bhumi emphasises that Rita Ferreira is deeply empathetic, morally grounded, and instinctively sharp. “She knows what’s right, and she’s strong. Her moral compass goes towards the right side always, and she’s brilliant. She has great instinct, she has courage and she’s brave. I feel women in general are that because of the conditioning we have gone through over generations irrespective of the professional background that they belong to,” she concludes.

Daldal is a chilling psychological crime thriller directed by Amrit Raj Gupta and produced by Vikram Malhotra and Suresh Triveni under the banner of Abundantia Entertainment. Created by Suresh Triveni and written by Sreekanth Agneeaswaran, Rohan D’Souza, Priya Saggi, and Hussain Haidry, the series is based on Vish Dhamija’s bestselling book Bhendi Bazaar. Starring Bhumi Satish Pednekkar alongside Samara Tijori and Aditya Rawal, Daldal is set to premiere on Prime Video in India and across 240 countries and territories worldwide on January 30.
