Amitabh Singh Unveils India Post’s Special Cover Celebrating 25 Years of Lagaan; Aamir Khan Receives First Commemorative Album

Mumbai, June 30, 2026: Marking a significant milestone in Indian cinema and philately, Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, unveiled a commemorative Special Cover to celebrate the 25th anniversary of at a grand ceremony held in Mumbai on Tuesday. The occasion brought together stalwarts from the worlds of cinema, postal services and philately to honour one of India’s most iconic films.

As part of the ceremony, Amitabh Singh presented the first commemorative album of the Special Cover to the film’s lead actor, Aamir Khan, commemorating the enduring legacy of the Oscar-nominated classic that continues to inspire audiences across generations.

The event was attended by Ashutosh Gowariker, director of Lagaan, Sabbas Joseph, Co-founder and Director of Wizcraft Group; Simran Kaur, Director of Postal Services (Headquarters), Maharashtra Circle; Rekha QA Rizvi, Director, Mumbai GPO; noted philatelist Savita Jhingan, Rajesh Bagler, Assistant Director, Philately, Maharashtra Circle; Prashant Mishra, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mumbai City North Division; Dinesh Kumar Gupta, Senior Postmaster, Mumbai GPO; along with senior officers of the Department of Posts, members of the philatelic fraternity, distinguished guests and cinema enthusiasts.

Released in 2001, Lagaan is regarded as one of the greatest achievements in Indian cinema. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by and starring Aamir Khan, the period sports drama narrated the inspiring story of a small village in colonial India that challenges British rulers to a game of cricket to escape oppressive taxation. The film earned widespread critical acclaim, became a global success and received an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film, taking Indian storytelling to audiences across the world.

The commemorative Special Cover released by India Post celebrates not only the film’s silver jubilee but also its enduring contribution to India’s cultural and cinematic heritage. Special Covers are issued to mark landmark achievements of national significance, making them treasured collectibles for philatelists and history enthusiasts alike.

Speaking on the significance of the occasion, postal officials highlighted how philately serves as a powerful medium to preserve the nation’s rich cultural legacy. By commemorating Lagaan, India Post has recognised a film whose themes of courage, unity, resilience and hope continue to resonate even twenty-five years after its release.

The release ceremony concluded with the presentation of the first commemorative album to Aamir Khan, symbolising the Department of Posts’ tribute to a film that redefined Indian cinema on the global stage. The event stood as a celebration of cinematic excellence, national pride and the timeless power of storytelling, ensuring that Lagaan’s remarkable legacy will continue to be remembered through India’s philatelic history.
