The Delhi High Court rules that the film Doosra infringed upon former captain Sourav Ganguly’s personality rights, ordering prominent disclaimers in Hindi and English at both ends of the movie alongside a Rs 2 cr deposit.

The legal battle concerning the protection of celebrity identity and personal legacy has reached a significant milestone. The Delhi High Court has delivered a clear ruling in the lawsuit filed by former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly alongside Luv Films, affirming that the film Doosra violated his personality and publicity rights. As a part of its directives, the Court has instructed the makers to deposit Rs 2 crore for infringing upon his rights and has disallowed the film from being released on OTT platforms or anywhere else.

In its observation, the Court noted that elements of Sourav Ganguly’s persona and life events are intertwined with the narrative of the movie, making it practically unfeasible to excise those specific portions from the final cut. Addressing this, the bench directed the film’s makers, Ramesh Deo Productions Private Limited, to display explicit disclaimers in both Hindi and English at the very beginning and the end of the movie.

These mandatory disclaimers will explicitly inform viewers that former captain Sourav Ganguly never gave consent for the commercial use or depiction of his persona in the film, and that the project does not claim any official association or authorization to violate his individual publicity rights.

This decision marks an important step forward in safeguarding the legal rights, autonomy, and brand value of public figures against unauthorized commercial exploitation in media and cinema.

Releasing on 14th May 2026, Dada- The Sourav Ganguly Story is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg.
