“When there are seven lakh singers out there, the biggest hero becomes the range”- Himesh Reshammiya Drops Major Advice For New Singers On Komal Nahta’s Game Changers: The Music Series
Komal Nahta, one of India’s most respected trade analysts, is back with a fresh season of his podcast Game Changers: The Music Series. This edition shines a spotlight on celebrated singers, composers, and music maestros as they share their creative journeys, inspirations, and the untold stories behind the music that has shaped generations. The latest episode featured Himesh Reshammiya.
Known for redefining Indian pop and film music with his compositions, signature vocal style, and a string of record-breaking chartbusters, Himesh Reshammiya stands as one of the most dynamic music composers in the industry. During a candid conversation on the show, he opened up about his personal musical evolution and offered insights for up-and-coming talent. Talking about his journey and advice for new musicians, he shared, “For a singer, my advice would be to find a great composer, jam with them and get a song that suits your range. When there are seven lakh singers out there, the biggest hero becomes the range.
This singer can perform a particular range really well. I have got used to listening to different kinds of music and exploring different vocal ranges. Earlier, I was very clear that apart from Kishore Da, Rafi Da, Lata Ji and Asha Ji’s voices, I didn’t want to listen to anything else. But now that I have explored the world of music, I have accepted and embraced different voices. How do I go back to that era? As an audience, it is not possible. I will accept some things and not accept others.
Now, I want to hear different things. Today, the range becomes the hero. If someone is ‘kamaal’ in a particular range, why would you want me to sing in, for example, Jagjit Singh’s voice? That is not possible. You cannot ask me to sing songs in Himesh’s range. Arijit Singh is able to sing all kinds of songs, and that is his greatest quality. Then there are Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan, who can do the same.
Some singers are good in one particular zone, while others are completely versatile. They have God’s blessings. But those who excel in one particular zone need to choose the best songs that suit their range. Even after putting in all that effort, they are often left wondering when a composer will call them. You need to showcase your work on YouTube and not worry about the views. Maybe someone will connect with your songs. You might end up posting 50, 100 or even 200 songs, but at least someone will connect with your work. Don’t be afraid of judgement. If your work is good, it will reach the right people, but you will have to make a consistent effort.”
