”You Can Call Me an ‘Accidental Actor'”: Kranti Prakash Jha on How a UPSC Dream Led Him to Acting”

Kranti Prakash Jha has carved a niche for himself as one of OTT’s most compelling performers, earning acclaim for his layered portrayals in project like Raktanchal. Yet, the actor insists that none of this was part of the blueprint. Before scripts, sets and cameras became his world, he had only one ambition to crack the UPSC examination and become an IPS officer. Looking back at the unexpected twists of fate, Kranti says with a smile, “You can call me an accidental actor.” Ironically, cinema had always been a constant in his life. As a child, he and his brother were such passionate film buffs that they watched nearly 250 films in a year, meticulously maintaining a notebook of every movie they saw.

Despite that love for films, acting never crossed his mind as a profession. While studying at Hindu College, Kranti became part of its renowned theatre society, founded by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. “I was part of the theatre culture at Hindu College. Imtiaz Ali and Vishal Bhardwaj are seniors from our college theatre group. I was a very small part of that ecosystem, working on productions and in the drama society, but I never thought of becoming an actor,” Kranti recalls.

His sights were firmly set elsewhere. “UPSC was my only aim. I wanted to become an IPS officer,” he says. Even the fashion shows he participated in during college were never stepping stones to Bollywood. “I also did fashion shows because I was told I was handsome,” he says.

The defining turn came when his friends persuaded him to spend a few months in Mumbai before preparing for the next UPSC cycle. Generally many newcomers who arrive in Bombay with uncertainty, Kranti found unwavering support from acclaimed screenwriter Ritesh Shah, best known for writing Pink, and his senior lyricist, writer and actor Swanand Kirkire. “I never had to go through that. Ritesh Shah and Swanand Kirkire helped me with food and shelter. They took me along to audition and find something new in life.

In a recent interview Kranti looks back on his unconventional journey with complete faith in destiny. “I have always believed in ‘Jo Ram Rachi Rakha,'” he says. From a young man preparing for the civil services to becoming one of the industry’s most dependable performers, his story is proof that sometimes the most extraordinary careers are the ones that were never planned. Today, with one powerful performance after another, Kranti Prakash Jha has established himself as one of the finest actors in the OTT space an artist whose authenticity, intensity and versatility continue to set him apart.
