Amit Trivedi reveals why he wasn’t part of big-budget projects despite his success: “I was pure and listening to my heart” on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers: The Music Series
Komal Nahta, one of India’s most respected trade analysts, is back with a fresh season of his podcast Game Changers: The Music Series. This edition shines a spotlight on celebrated singers, composers, and music maestros as they share their creative journeys, inspirations, and the untold stories behind the music that has shaped generations. The latest episode featured Amit Trivedi.
Known for redefining modern Indian film music with his distinct soundscapes, Amit Trivedi has consistently made melodies that resonate with audiences. Despite delivering critically acclaimed and memorable soundtracks throughout his career, the composer recently talked about his journey and why big-budget commercial projects often went to others. Speaking about his standing in the industry, Amit Trivedi shares, “I know the reason behind this. I have spoken with Bhushan Kumar sir, Boney Kapoor sir and Karan Johar about this in their offices. I don’t belong to anyone in this industry. I didn’t have the knowledge when I entered the profession. I did four films in the span of four years — 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. By 2012, I realised that what I was doing was called alternate cinema and music. I wasn’t aware of genres, blockbuster music or commercial music. I wasn’t listening to Bollywood music that much to have that knowledge. It was my stupidity, foolishness, naivety, whatever you want to call it. I was pure and listening to my heart, going with the flow and doing whatever was best for the film. Later, I learnt about the alternate genre. Kai Po Che, Lootera and all these films had music that didn’t fall into the commercial blockbuster category. No filmmakers, especially labels and producers, would have faith in me to try me out for a big film. That is a risk they might not want to take.”
