Indian actress Harshita Gaur, who continues to garner appreciation for her latest work in Mirzapur and the success of Waiting Hai, has opened up about the influence of legendary actress Rekha on her approach to acting. As she explores new dimensions of her craft, Harshita reveals how revisiting Rekha Ji’s iconic performances helped her prepare for Waiting Hai, marking the first time she portrayed an Indian wife on screen.

For Harshita, Rekha’s filmography has been a masterclass in understanding the many shades of a woman. From the grace and emotional depth of Umrao Jaan to the warmth of Khubsoorat and the layered relationships portrayed in Silsila, Rekha Ji’s performances have left a lasting impression on her. While preparing for Waiting Hai, Harshita returned to her films to observe how she portrayed an Indian wife and navigated her relationship with her husband on screen.

Speaking about Rekha Ji’s influence on her performance in Waiting Hai, Harshita Gaur said, “Waiting Hai was particularly special for me because it was the first time I was playing a Indian wife, based out of heartlands. When I thought about the kind of woman I wanted to bring to life, Rekha Ji became a very important reference point for me. You think of a graceful Indian wife’s character and top of your mind is Rekha ji. The simplicity grace, innocence and strength she brought all together in her characters is absolutely beautiful “.

She further said “There is something so amazing about the way she portrayed women who could be homely, sweet, innocent and soft-spoken, yet had so much strength within them. She never needed to be loud to make her presence felt. I went back and watched her films again, especially to understand the way she performed scenes with her husband on screen, the silences, the expressions and the little nuances that said so much without words. That was a wonderful learning experience for me. I went back to her movies to prepare for Waiting Hai ”

Harshita’s admiration for Rekha goes beyond a single performance or film. She looks up to actors who have built enduring careers through their ability to evolve, take creative risks and bring depth to the women they portray. Alongside Rekha, she draws inspiration from the journeys of Smita Patil, Tabu, Vidya Balan and Shabana Azmi, performers whose filmographies reflect a commitment to diverse, complex and memorable characters.

“I have always been drawn to actors who have built a body of work that stands the test of time. Rekha Ji, Smita Patil, Tabu, Vidya Balan and Shabana Azmi are all incredibly inspiring to me. Each of them has carved out a distinct identity and has never been limited to one kind of role. That is the kind of career graph I aspire to have, where I can keep surprising people”

With several projects in the works, Harshita Gaur is gearing up for an eventful year, continuing to explore new opportunities while drawing inspiration from the performers and films that have left a lasting mark on Indian cinema.
