FROM CONTESTANT TO HOST TO GANG LEADER: BANI J’s EXTRAORDINARY ROADIES JOURNEY
Twenty years after stepping into the world of Roadies as a contestant, Bani J returns to the show that shaped her journey, this time as a Gang Leader, ready to mentor a new generation and take on an entirely new challenge.
Some journeys come full circle, but very few offer the opportunity to experience the same platform from almost every possible perspective. For Bani J, MTV Roadies has been one such journey. What began with an audition in 2006 has evolved into a long-standing association with the franchise, taking her from being a contestant to its host and now, a Gang Leader on Roadies REBIRTH.
Her Roadies story began with its fourth season, when an 18-year-old Bani walked into the audition room with an outspoken personality, a competitive spirit and a determination to carve her own path. Quickly emerging as one of the season’s most memorable contestants, she eventually finished as the first runner-up. The experience proved to be a turning point, opening doors to opportunities she had not initially imagined.
At just 19, Bani made her Bollywood feature film debut, marking the beginning of her journey in the entertainment industry. She subsequently became an MTV VJ and returned to the Roadies franchise in a new capacity. Following Rannvijay Singha’s transition to Gang Leader, Bani took over as the show’s host, becoming the only former contestant in Roadies history to have occupied that position. From facing the questions at an audition to steering the show herself, she came a long way from where it all began.
Her career continued to span multiple formats and industries. Bani explored acting across Bollywood, Punjabi, Kollywood and Tollywood cinema, while also participating in Khatron Ke Khiladi 4 and Bigg Boss 10. She further expanded her acting repertoire with her portrayal of Umang Singh in Amazon Prime Video’s popular series Four More Shots Please! Across these transitions, her willingness to explore unfamiliar spaces and take on new challenges remained a defining part of her journey.
On and off screen, fitness has been another significant cornerstone of Bani’s life and career. Her commitment to health, strength and physical well-being has shaped her lifestyle over the years, extending beyond personal discipline into her professional identity. A strong advocate of fitness, she became the first female brand ambassador for MYP, further strengthening her association with the fitness space. For Bani, fitness is not simply about aesthetics; it is about consistency, resilience and constantly challenging one’s own limitations.
Now, as Roadies enters a new chapter with REBIRTH, Bani returns to a familiar territory with an entirely different responsibility. The season introduces an OGs versus NewGs format, bringing together six Gang Leaders across two competing teams. Bani joins Abhishek Malhan and Baseer Ali as part of the NewGs, taking on the OG camp comprising Nikhil Chinapa, Neha Dhupia and Prince Narula. The season also brings a special moment for Bani, as Nikhil, who was part of the panel during her original Roadies audition, is now competing against her as a fellow Gang Leader.
_Speaking about her return, Bani shares, “Roadies has changed a lot and so have I, and coming back as a NewG is definitely an interesting feeling. I’ve experienced this show from so many different perspectives – as a contestant, a host and now as a Gang Leader. Each role has taught me something different, and that’s what makes returning so special. As a Gang Leader, I’m looking forward to creating a solid gang and can’t wait to meet the Roadies that come into the journey. Being a Roadie isn’t easy- you have to earn your place in the journey day by day. With the OGs and the NewGs coming together, there’s obviously going to be a lot more unpredictability. New faces, new dynamics, new rivalries and probably a few things nobody sees coming. That’s what makes Roadies exciting. Let’s see who actually has the guts to rise from the ashes.”_
As a Gang Leader, Bani now brings the perspective of someone who has experienced the Roadies journey from multiple sides. She understands that being a Roadie requires more than physical strength; it demands mental resilience, adaptability and the conviction to stand by one’s choices.
Nearly two decades after her first audition, Bani is back to help shape the journeys of others. The young contestant who once aspired to make her mark on Roadies now gets to decide who has what it takes to earn that title. And this time, she isn’t just here to be part of the journey – she’s here to lead it.
