Sitarist Anoushka Shankar collaborated with Gorillaz for the latest album ‘The Mountain’, and soon after its release, she performed alongside the band at Saturday Night Live. In AKHL Studio’s fine creation, Anoushka took the wheel with Gorillaz and performed Moon Cave on Saturday Night Live.

Taking to her social media handle, Anoushka shared, “What an insane, full-on bucket list experience. @gorillaz, you are beyond. @nbcsnl, it’s unreal to have been on your set last night. Thank you for having us! 🙏🏾”

What makes the Gorillaz album a standout is Anoushka Shankar featuring in 7 tracks out of the 15 and sharing the space with musical titan Asha Bhosle, Asha Puthli, Amaan Ali Bangash, Ayaan Ali Bangash and international artists including Bizarrap, Kara Jackson, Paul Simonon, Johnny Marr, Black Thought and others. It brings together the iconic figure, Asha Bhosle, with one of the most relevant global figures of today, Anoushka Shankar. Out of the 15, the artist adds her sitar touch to The Mountain, Moon Cave, Orange County, The Empty Dream Machine, The Plastic Guru, The Sweet Prince and The Sad God.

By performing on Saturday Night Live, Anoushka Shankar joins the league of South Asians who’ve been a pivotal part of the platform, including comedian Aziz Ansari, the first South Asian to host Saturday Night Live, followed by Nimesh Patel, the first-ever Indian-American to be hired as a writer on SNL in 2017. And with Anoushka Shankar joining the elite league by performing on Saturday Night Live, the moment feels like another meaningful step in the expansion of South Asian representation on one of the most influential platforms globally.

In February, Anoushka became the first Indian sitarist to appear on The Graham Norton Show. What added to the feat is that she appeared alongside Gorillaz and performed Orange County alongside Kara Jackson. “Coming down off this tour is going to hit hard,” she had shared.

With Anoushka Shankar on sitar, Bangash brothers on sarod and Asha Bhosle’s unmistakable vocals, Gorillaz’s new album is a masterclass in cross-continental collaboration and a reminder that collaboration across cultures isn’t just about novelty, but also about reshaping the emotional and sonic boundaries of music.
